Lavacca and Goldstein Named New Paltz Athletes of the Week
NEW PALTZ – — Men’s soccer forward Mario Lavacca (Port Washington, NY – P.D. Schreiber HS) and women’s volleyball right side hitter Jackie Goldstein (Port Jervis, NY – Minisink Valley HS) have been named the SUNY New Paltz Male and Female Athletes of the Week by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee.
Lavacca, a junior, scored five points in two conference games last weekend. He had two goals in a 4-2 loss to Brockport on Sept. 27. Lavacca also registered an assist in a 2-2 with Geneseo the next day. Lavacca, who has 15 points on seven goals and one assist this fall, is tied with teammate Matt Daum for the team lead in scoring.
The SUNY New Paltz men’s soccer team (2-7-1) will play a pair of conference road games at Buffalo State (Oct. 4) and Fredonia (Oct. 5) this weekend.
Goldstein, a senior, averaged 3.7 kills per game and had a. 342 hitting percentage to help lead the Hawks to two conference wins. She recorded 15 kills, four digs and two blocks in a 3-1 win over Potsdam on Sept. 28. Goldstein also registered six kills, four assists, four service aces and had a .333 hitting percentage in a 3-0 win over SUNYIT that same day.
Goldstein is averaging a team-best 2.5 kills per game for the SUNY New Paltz (4-19) women’s volleyball team who will play in a tournament at Dominican College on Saturday (Oct.5).
