Women’s Field Hockey loses heartbreaker
NEW PALTZ — The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team dropped a close match in overtime to Vassar on Tuesday by a score of 5-4. The loss dropped the Hawks’ record to 0-2 on the season while Vassar improved to 1-0.
Despite goals from Lisa Taub (Greenlawn, NY) and Jodi Novatka (Southampton, NY) and leading in shots 11-9, New Paltz trailed Vassar 3-2 at the half. The Brewers received two goals by Sarah Margolis-Pineo and one from Ellen Ridyard in the opening stanza. Margolis-Pineo struck again early in the second half giving Vassar a two-goal cushion with just under 30 minutes remaining. The Hawks stormed back though on goals from Alison Taub (Greenlawn, NY) and Kelly Anderson (Kingston, NY) sending the game into overtime. In the second extra session, Margolis-Pineo tallied her fourth goal of the game with 5:46 left giving Vassar the victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Clarke (Stone Ridge, NY) made 11 saves in goal for the Hawks who play their State University of New York Athletic Conference opener next Friday at Geneseo.
