Softball Team Remains Winless
SALEM, VA. — SUNY New Paltz closed its spring trip with two losses on Saturday at the Bridgewater State College Tournament at the Moyer Sports Complex.
The Hawks lost 13-0 to host Bridgewater and were edged 3-1 by Mary Washington. Late Friday, Averett blanked New Paltz, 11-0.
The last two days were the first contests for the Hawks, which had previously been confined to the university Air Structure almost exclusively since practice began for them in February. New Paltz’s opponents, meanwhile, have not only been outside, but have had 15 or so games in the books already each.
New Paltz led 1-0 against Mary Washington on Valerie Blackman’s (Castle Creek/Chenango Forks) RBI single in the bottom of the first, but allowed the Eagles to tie the score in the third, and take the lead with two runs in the fourth. The Hawks managed just three hits in the game against Mary Washington pitcher Jen Rice, who struck out six New Paltz batters.
Three errors helped do in the Hawks against Bridgewater, which scored four unearned runs, en route to the eight-run rule-shortened victory.
New Paltz returns home to host Rensselaer for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday at Deane Field.
