Softball Team Loses Two
SALEM, VA. — SUNY New Paltz opened its 2001 softball season with two five-inning losses at the Bridgewater State College Tournament on Friday at the Moyer Sports Complex.
The Hawks lost 8-0 to Bethany (W.Va.) College and fell 15-5 to Savannah (Ga.) College on the first day of the two-day tournament.
Twin sisters Amy and Rachael Schafer combined to go 4-for-6 at the plate for Bethany (12-3), with three extra-base hits, including two home runs by Rachael, the game’s winning pitcher (11 strikeouts). Freshman catcher Valerie Blackman (Castle Creek/Chenango Forks) and sophomore outfielder Erin Morris (Cooperstown/Cooperstown) provided New Paltz’s only two hits in the opener.
Against Savannah (17-6), New Paltz jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first inning, but allowed all 15 of the Bees’ runs over the first three innings. Senior shortstop Kelly McFarlane (Wappingers Falls/Ketcham) went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI, while Blackman and sophomore first baseman Katie Monahan (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) both went 1-for-3 in the loss.
New Paltz (0-2) completes its spring break trip tomorrow with day two of the tournament.
