Men’s Soccer Closes Year With Win
NEW PALTZ — Freshman Mario Lavacca had his team-leading ninth goal, as SUNY New Paltz closed its season with a 2-1 victory over Keuka College on Saturday afternoon.
The (6-13) Hawks’ two seniors, Stephen Ferrara and John Baker figured largely in the outcome in their final collegiate contest.
Ferrara assisted on Lavacca’s goal, while Baker converted a penalty kick awarded just before halftime.
Nick Hurley made the game interesting for Keuka (8-6-1), with a goal in the 79th minute.
Freshman Michael Vaughan-Cherubin (4-1) made seven saves in 87 minutes to pick up the win for the Hawks, while Eric Carpenter (three saves) and Michael Mozzetti (two saves) each played a half in goal for the Warriors.
New Paltz, which had started the year 0-6, won five of its last nine matches, including its first victory at SUNYAC rival Cortland since 1972.
