Field Hockey Drops Close Match
POUGHKEEPSIE — Freshman goalkeeper Liz Clarke made 17 saves to lead a strong New Paltz effort against Vassar College’s well-established squad, and forward Kelly Anderson had her second goal in as many matches, as the Hawks lost 3-1 in their second-ever field hockey match on Wednesday afternoon.
The game was scoreless for the first 23 1/2 minutes, before Brooke Gentile put Vassar (1-0) on the scoreboard. Teammate Beth Pierson made it 2-0 at the half on an assist by Kristine Austin with 3:45 remaining.
Ten minutes into the second half, Anderson, last year’s Mid-Hudson Athletic League Field Hockey Player of the Year at Kingston High, scored on a pass from Meredith Herfel. Vassar added its final goal, scored by Annie Ferrell, with 8:47 left in regulation.
New Paltz plays at Drew University at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
