Pataki Appoints Kuhlmann to SUNY New Paltz College Council
NEW PALTZ — Governor George Pataki has announced the appointment of Carolyn Kuhlmann, of Ellenville, to the College Council of the State University of New York at New Paltz. The College Council serves as an advisory body to the president on matters pertaining to university policies and operations. There are currently 10 gubernatorial appointees to the Council.
Kuhlmann is the founding president of the Ulster County Reading Council and was active in the New York State Reading Association. She presently serves on several educational advisory committees and, for the past three years, has been a member of the Ellenville Central School Board of Education, presently serving as its vice president.
Kuhlmann earned her bachelor’s degree in child psychology from Cornell University and her master’s in education from SUNY New Paltz. She also holds a Certificate in Reading from New Paltz and has taught graduate-level reading courses, as an adjunct professor, at the university.
For many years, Kuhlmann taught second grade in the Ellenville Central Schools and later moved on to become a reading teacher. At the time of her retirement from the district, she was coordinator of language arts.
Kuhlmann is a member of two educational honorary societies, Delta Kappa Gamma and Phi Delta Kappa, and serves on the executive board of Phi Delta Kappa.
Beyond her educational interests, Kuhlmann has also taken an active interest in the community. She is a past president, and currently serves as civic chairman, of the Shawangunk Garden Club. She is a member of the Ulster County Historical Society, the Huguenot Historical Society, the D & H Canal Society, and a board member of the D & H Canal Society Heritage Alliance. Kuhlmann is a member of a local service organization, the Noonday Club, and is a board member of the Ellenville Hospital Auxiliary, as well as a regular volunteer at the hospital.
Kuhlmann succeeds Kingston attorney, Eli Basch, whose term recently expired. Her term will expire on June 30, 2006.
