McGovern and Used Book Sale a Hit at Sojourner Truth Library
NEW PALTZ — A generous donation from Kevin McGovern of LaGrange, NY, has provided the Sojourner Truth Library at the State University of New York at New Paltz with an inventory of more than 15,000 used books. Already, 8,000 paperbacks from the collection, sold to a bookdealer, have generated more than $1,300, making McGovern’s gift the largest single contribution received by the Friends of the Library. Daily used book sales, held in the lobby of the Library, have been averaging $100- plus a day.
“This is a very generous gift,” said Paul Brown, chairman of the Friends of the Sojourner Truth Library. “We are all very excited about what this means for the acquisition fund for the Sojourner Truth Library. Gifts like those of Kevin McGovern’s and contributions from Friends of the Library members every year guarantee that the library will continue to be a premier resource for the community and the College.”
McGovern, a part-time geography student at New Paltz, donated the book collection through the Friends of the Sojourner Truth Library, an association of faculty, students, parents, alumni, and community and business members dedicated to promoting and enhancing the library as a shared resource. As the largest public academic library in the mid-Hudson region, the Sojourner Truth Library has become a regional center of research and scholarship through its extensive interlibrary lending program and free public access to its collections and facilities.
The used book sale is being held daily during library hours in the lobby of the Sojourner Truth Library through May 15 or as long as supplies last. The books are priced at 50 cents to $1 each.
