GE Board Update

During fall 2023, the GE Board collaborated with the GE Implementation Task Force to respond to SUNY’s new directive that the GE Core Competencies of Critical Thinking and Reasoning and Information Literacy be assessed within the first 60 credits of students’ degree programs. The GE Implementation Task Force provided four options to the GE Board for assessing the Core Competencies. These options included course-based assessment, department-based assessment, campus-designed assessment, and commercial assessment.

Together, the GE Board and GE Implementation Task Force put forth a proposal for a campus-designed assessment using the Higher Education Data Sharing (HEDS) Research Practices Survey to assess a cohort of sophomores in spring 2024. Following approval of the proposal by the Faculty Senate, the Office of Institutional Research set up an Information Literacy competency assessment in Qualtrics and distributed it to students in spring 2024.

In addition to assessing Information Literacy, an assessment of the Social Sciences Knowledge area is being conducted this spring. An assessment team for the Social Sciences was assembled by GE Board member Oksana Laleko. The group includes Felicia Hodges, Digital Media and Journalism; Andrew Horvitz, Sociology; Oksana Laleko, Linguistics; Stephen Pampinella, Political Science and International Relations; Gowri Parameswaran, Educational Studies; and Tim Vatovec, Geography and Environmental Studies.
