Protect yourself during cold weather forecasted for Friday, Feb. 3, into Saturday, Feb. 4

With sub-zero temperatures forecasted in the New Paltz area on Feb. 3 and 4, the University shares the following message from the New York State Office of Employee Relations:

Starting Friday and continuing into this weekend, many areas of the State will experience below zero temperatures and wind gusts that could generate extreme windchills, in some cases over 50 degrees below zero. Agencies must be mindful of these conditions and limit outdoor work to that which is critical to operations and/or safety of the public or employees. Realizing that some outside work will be necessary, agencies should ensure that employees take proper precautions. Actions that agencies and/or employees can take include, but are not limited to, knowing the symptoms of cold stress (such as reddening skin, tingling, pain, swelling, leg cramps, numbness, and blisters), dressing properly for the expected conditions such as wearing at least three layers of loose-fitting clothing, insulated gloves and boots, and covering one’s head; monitoring one’s own physical condition and the condition of coworkers; staying as dry as possible and bringing extra clothes; and taking frequent breaks in warm, dry areas and drinking warm liquids.

SUNY New Paltz’s Office of Emergency Management has provided additional information, including details about a warming center in Kingston, New York:

The National Weather Service in Albany is forecasting dangerously cold temperatures for our region, beginning just after midnight tonight, and continuing through the early evening Saturday. A Wind Chill Watch is in effect for both days, with wind chill temperatures potentially falling as low as -40 degrees. Above freezing temperatures are anticipated to re-enter the region Saturday evening.

If you, your friends, or your family live in the area – and have a need for a warming center – one will be opened in Kingston, at 80 Elmendorf Street (2nda Iglesia La Mision).

Please keep in mind that frostbite can occur in just a few minutes at such low temperatures. If you must venture outside, dress accordingly. Also, be conscientious about the potential impacts on your homes and pets. Report freezing conditions in campus buildings to Facilities Operations & Maintenance at (845) 257-3301.
