“Unnatural Acts,” spring 2022

The Department of Theatre Arts at SUNY New Paltz received more nominations than ever before in the 2022 BroadwayWorld Awards recognizing outstanding regional productions in central New York.

Students and faculty secured 45 nominations for performances from the 2021-22 season, and were nominated in all non-professional awards categories save one.

That includes 27 nominations for current New Paltz students for their work in direction, costume design, lighting design, scenic design, sound design and performance.

Some highlights:

Unnatural Acts,” collaboratively written by members of Plastic Theatre, conceived and directed by Assistant Professor Tony Speciale, nominated for Best Play and Best New Play or Musical. Won Best New Play or Musical (Non-Professional), Best Play (Non-Professional), Best Ensemble Performance (Non-Professional), Best Performer in A Play (Non-Professional) – Parker Howland, and Best Sound Design of A Play or Musical (Non-Professional)

The Useful Citizen,” written by Assistant Professor Katya Stanislavskaya, nominated for Best Musical

Associate Professor Catherine Doherty received two nominations for Best Direction of a Musical for “Songs for a New World” and “The Useful Citizen

Pages From a Love Manifesto,” developed and devised by then-student Nico Torrez ’22, was nominated for 13 awards including Best Play, Best New Play or Musical, and Best Ensemble Performance

The BroadwayWorld Awards represent the year’s best as judged by the publication’s editors and by the viewing public, who are invited to submit their own nominees and vote for the winners. For students, that translates to early-career credentials and recognition with real currency in the theatre industry.
