“Context is Everything” in Assistant Professor David Bright’s guide through disinformation

David Bright, assistant professor of counselor education, is guiding readers through technology’s distorting effects on truth and perception with his new textbook, “Context is Everything: How to Navigate Life in Multiple Realities,” published by Cognella Press.

“Context is Everything” explains how each of us is raised in our own unique context that shapes our identity, narratives, beliefs, and willingness to interpret facts. Bright pulls from his extensive work as a mental health, career, and school counselor to help readers better understand how we create our own social narratives and identities.

“We live in divisive times, fueled by disinformation and negative media portrayals,” he said. “I believe the book to be a meaningful personal read and also a valuable supplement to academic classes in the social sciences and liberal arts.”

By using case studies and research along with personal anecdotes and real-world examples from his career, Bright teaches us how our own biases can affect how our interactions with people, and how we can come together despite our varying worldviews and perspectives.
