The SUNY New Paltz Black Studies Department, founded in 1969, is one of the oldest Black Studies departments in the nation. The curriculum has helped generations of New Paltz students gain deeper understanding of the history of people of African ancestry and the forces that shape the contemporary Black experience. New Paltz Black Studies graduates have gone on to use their degrees as the foundation of careers in law, political science, history, sociology, education and the arts, among other fields and professions.

The late Professor A.J. Williams-Myers was a core contributor to the growth and direction of the Department over a tenure at the College that spanned decades. Read more here about his life and legacy.
