College mourns death of undergraduate astronomy major Michael Capurso

It is with great sadness that we share news of the death of Michael Capurso, an undergraduate student from Shohola, Pennsylvania, on Nov. 8. The College was notified by his family of his passing following an automobile accident on Nov. 8. He was 26.

Michael had been a member of our campus community since enrolling in 2019. He was expected to graduate next May with a degree in astronomy.

An amateur astronomer and astrophotographer, Michael published many of his photos on social media, including some that he took from locations on the SUNY New Paltz campus.

He was a positive and supportive presence in the Department of Physics & Astronomy who participated in many department events and study groups.

In addition to his contributions at New Paltz, Michael was an Eagle Scout and an active member of the North Jersey Mineralogical Society.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Michael’s family and friends and to the students, faculty and staff who knew him. His family advised the College of plans to hold a memorial service at a later date. We will share additional details with the campus community as we receive them.

If you are a student who needs assistance in processing this sad loss, the Counseling Center is available at 257-2920. Employees are encouraged to contact the Employee Assistance Program at 257-2886.
