Survey says: Student feedback propels SUNY New Paltz to top 350 nationwide in Wall Street Journal college rankings

SUNY New Paltz moved up to No. 349 in the 2022 edition of the Wall Street Journal / Times Higher Education College Rankings, a competitive system that uses survey feedback from current students to compare colleges and universities across the U.S.

The annual Times Higher Education U.S. Student Survey asks more than 170,000 college students (including many New Paltz students) about the value of their degree, successful outcomes after graduation, diversity and inclusion on campus, and overall satisfaction with their higher education experience.

New Paltz routinely outperforms comparable institutions on these criteria, and that’s reflected in the Wall Street Journal rankings: Fewer than 800 colleges and universities nationwide even qualify, so the College’s position in the top 350 not only places it in the top half of the list, but also above hundreds of institutions that don’t meet the minimum standards to be ranked.

About the Wall Street Journal / Times Higher Education Methodology

Each college is scored on 15 metrics grouped into four broad categories – Resources (30%), Engagement (20%), Outcomes (40%) and Environment (10%) – based on publicly available data and responses gathered in the survey of more than 170,000 enrolled students.

Relative to other schools, the College does best in the Outcomes category, where our high graduation rate and post-graduate salary, combined with relatively low debt after graduation, prove the value of a New Paltz degree.

Our strong score in the Engagement category is an indicator of outstanding academic and leadership opportunities in and out of the classroom. New Paltz students who are surveyed consistently respond positively when asked if they would recommend the College to a friend or family member.

Environment is another category where the College comes in well above the nationwide average. Our students describe New Paltz as an inclusive community, and that’s backed up by our statistics on student and faculty diversity and international student engagement.
