A recent change to federal law has temporarily expanded students’ eligibility to receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during the ongoing COVID-19 public health emergency.
The Consolidated Appropriations Act 2021 now extends SNAP benefits to students enrolled at least half-time in an institution of higher education, who either
1. Are eligible to participate in state or federally financed work study during the regular school year, as determined by their institution of higher education, or
2. Have an expected family contribution of $0 in the current academic year.
These new, temporary exemptions will be in effect until 30 days after the COVID-19 public health emergency is lifted.
Students who think they may be eligible under this new policy can check their Expected Family Contribution on their Student Aid Report by signing into their FAFSA account and clicking on “View or Print Your Student Aid Report.”
