School of Business celebrates student greatness at end-of-semester ceremony

Faculty, friends and family members of SUNY New Paltz business students gathered on Friday, Dec. 6, to honor students’ hard work and exceptional achievement at the fall 2019 School of Business Award & Graduation Ceremony.

“This event is the highlight of each semester, as we pay tribute to our students’ accomplishments and share fond memories of their time in the School of Business,” said School of Business Dean Kristin Backhaus.

The biannual event combines award presentations, honor society inductions and acknowledgements of other milestones into a single celebration.

This year opened with a recognition of the newest members of the College’s chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the national honor society for students who attend collegiate business programs that are accredited by AACSB International.

The College’s Interim Provost, Barbara G. Lyman, is herself an honorary member of Beta Gamma Sigma. Lyman offered a few valedictory words to students ahead of their formal induction.

“It’s a special pleasure to be here today and join in congratulating you all,” Lyman said. “I know that you are thankful for and to those who have been part of the journey that has led you to this day. I join you in expressing gratitude to those who helped ensure your success, whether these have been family, friends, fellow students or the faculty and support staff of the School of Business.

The ceremony also featured members of the business faculty presenting Academic Awards to students who will graduate with an overall GPA of 3.8 or higher, and Outstanding Service Awards to those who demonstrated outstanding altruism and leadership throughout their time at New Paltz.

Lastly, looking ahead to the professional opportunities that await these graduates-to-be, the School of Business commended undergraduate and graduate students who earned high scores on the ETS Field Tests that measure career-readiness and program quality.
