Residence halls go head-to-head as Recyclemania returns

Recyclemania is back!

Throughout February and March, residence halls at SUNY New Paltz will compete against each other to determine who can recycle the most paper, glass, metal and plastic per person.

This year halls will be divided into two divisions, based on the type of recycling collection containers stationed outside each buildings.

The top hall by recycling rate in each division will receive a prize valued at $300.

The winning halls will be announced in the first week of April. Those halls’ Residence Hall Student Association (RHSA) executive boards will determine how to spend the award money to benefit everyone who lives there.

The Sustainability Ambassadors student group, in partnership with the Office of Camus Sustainability, organize this project each semester to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and challenge students to chip in and help the campus shrink its environmental footprint.

This year the lead coordinator is Kaitlyn Buckridge ’18 (Biology), a Sustainability Ambassador who will work with the RHSA and Residence Life to promote the competition.

Other students are chipping in too. Graphic designers in Adjunct Diane Attebury’s Type and Image class contributed poster designs that are now being displayed in the main entrance of the Sojourner Truth Library and on digital signage in all the Residence Halls.

Recyclemania is a national program begun in 2001 as a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. The competition has grown to include hundreds of schools and nine competition categories. The New Paltz Recycling Club brought the program to campus in 2008.
