SUNY New Paltz and Red Cross partner on hurricane relief discussion, Nov. 16

The Institute of Disaster Mental Health at SUNY New Paltz and the American Red Cross of the Mid-Hudson Valley will co-present a panel discussion with disaster relief responders, featuring local Red Cross volunteers who deployed this year to provide aid in areas affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

The event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 16, from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. in Lecture Center room 100 on the SUNY New Paltz campus. It is free and open to the public.

Local Red Cross volunteers will speak with New Paltz students and members of the community about their experiences responding during one of the most intense and destructive hurricane seasons in recent memory. They will also take questions from audience members.

Speakers include:

  • John Vale, Hurricane Harvey responder, on sheltering and standing up operations;
  • Patrick Horan, Hurricane Irma responder, on field promotions;
  • Frank Sierra, Puerto Rico responder, on flexibility in the field; and
  • Thomas McCarry, Hurricane Harvey responder, on disaster mental health
