Dear Members of the Campus Community:

I write to share the sad news of the passing of SUNY New Paltz distinguished alumnus U.S. Rep. Maurice D. Hinchey (D-Hurley) ’68 (English) ’70 (Education), who had an influential career in the New York State Assembly (1975-1993) and the U.S. Congress (1993-2013). Hinchey passed today, November 22, at the age of 79 after battling a terminal neurological disorder.

A leading progressive Democratic voice in Congress, Hinchey concentrated on the environment and education. He applied his New Paltz education to improving his community, his state, and his nation ― but most especially the lives of his constituents. His advocacy and support of SUNY New Paltz burnished our reputation, bolstered our resources, and helped us to better serve our students, the region, and the state.

Inspired by his broad impact, the SUNY Board of Trustees awarded Hinchey an honorary doctorate of humane letters – the highest honor that the State University of New York can bestow upon an individual. I had the pleasure of sharing this honor with Hinchey at the May 2013 Commencement Ceremony where he graciously accepted.

Please visit the College’s special tribute page that highlights Hinchey’s impactful career and enduring commitment to SUNY New Paltz.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Hinchey’s family and friends and to the alumni, faculty, staff and students who knew him.

Sincerely,

Donald P. Christian
President
