The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz announces programs for the fall 2017 semester.
These programs and events are presented in conjunction with the Dorsky’s exhibition, Artists as Innovators: Three Decades of New York State Council on the Arts / New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships, curated by Judith K. Brodsky and David C. Terry.
Artists as Innovators represents a unique partnership between the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and SUNY, a touring exhibition of three decades of New York artistry that will open at SUNY New Paltz this fall and travel to six additional SUNY campuses over the next three years. Its journey begins at The Dorsky Museum – Artists as Innovators will be on view in the Alice and Horace Chandler and North Galleries from Aug. 30 through Nov. 12, 2017. Use this link to learn more.

Readings by NYFA Literary Fellows
Join NYFA literary fellows Saïd Sayrafiezadeh, Ed Sanchez, Luc Sante and Akiko Busch for an afternoon of readings by these distinguished authors.
- Akiko Busch writes about design, culture and nature. She is the author of Geography of Home, The Uncommon Life of Common Objects and Nine Ways to Cross a River.
- Edwin Sanchez is an award-winning playwright, novelist and author of Diary of a Puerto Rican Demigod.
- Luc Sante is a frequent contributor to the New York Review of Books. His books include Low Life, Evidence, The Factory of Facts, Kill All Your Darlings and The Other Paris.
- Saïd Sayrafiezadeh is a memoirist, fiction writer and playwright. He is the author of the story collection, Brief Encounters With the Enemy, and the critically acclaimed memoir, When Skateboards Will Be Free.

Panel Discussion: The New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship Program
Join Artists as Innovators curators Judith K. Brodsky and David C. Terry, along with catalog essayist Paddy Johnson and exhibiting artist Lori Nix, for a panel discussion on the history of the NYFA. Conversation will touch on the early beginnings of the program, how it has funded unique projects by artists at critical stages in their careers, and the changing artistic trends that have taken place over the past thirty years of the awards.

Performance by Carmelita Tropicana
Carmelita Tropicana has been performing in New York’s downtown arts scene since the 1980s. Her style straddles performance art and theater with irreverent humor, subversive fantasy and bilingual puns.
Her work has been recognized with an Obie for Sustained Excellence in Performance (1999) and she has also received a Performance and Activism Award from the Women in Theater Program / American Theater in Higher Education (2015). Tropicana has taught at numerous universities and sits on the Board of Directors at Performance Space 122 and NYFA.

Performance: Linda Montano as Bob Dylan
NYFA Fellow Linda Mary Montano’s performance as Bob Dylan becomes a suspension of disbelief. Montano is a seminal figure in contemporary feminist performance art and her work since the mid-1960s has been critical in the development of video by, for, and about women. Her artwork is starkly autobiographical and her influence is wide ranging – she has been featured at museums including The New Museum in New York, MOCA San Francisco and the ICA in London.

Film: Lives of Performers, by NYFA Fellow Yvonne Rainer
Venue: Rosendale Theatre
In conjunction with “Dance Film Sundays,” join us at Rosendale Theatre for a screening of Lives of Performers, by NYFA Fellow Yvonne Rainer. A stark and revealing examination of romantic alliances, Lives of Performers centers on a man who can’t choose between two women and makes them both suffer.

SUNY New Paltz’s NYFA Fellows in Visual Art
In a “Slide Slam” style presentation, SUNY New Paltz art faculty and NYFA fellowship recipients Jamie Bennett (Crafts), Amy Cheng (Painting), Kathy Goodell (Sculpture), Carmen Lizardo (Photography), Emily Puthoff (Digital/Electronic Arts) and Nadia Sablin (Photography) share the work they created during their NYFA fellowships, and discuss how it has evolved to the present day.

Gallery Talk: Embracing Upheaval with NYFA Fellow and Exhibiting Artist Wendell Castle
Wendell Castle has been a sculptor, designer and educator for more than five decades. Throughout his career, he has challenged the boundaries of functional design, becoming renowned for his craftsmanship, organic forms and techniques for stack-laminating wood. His work can be found in the permanent collections of over 50 museums worldwide. He will discuss his life and career at this gallery talk, against the backdrop of the Artists as Innovators exhibition.

NYSCA/NYFA Fellowship Application Information Session
NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowships, awarded in fifteen different disciplines over a three-year period, are $7,000 cash awards made to individual artists living and working in the state of New York for unrestricted use. These Fellowships are not project grants but are intended to fund an artist’s vision or voice, and provide the gift of time, regardless of the level of their artistic career.
Representatives from NYFA will be on hand at The Dorsky on Oct. 23 to explain the application process, and offer examples on how to best present your work. A Q&A will follow the presentation.

Performance: “Art Collides”
SUNY New Paltz students respond to artworks on display in the museum. “Art Collides” is organized by the Dorsky Museum Ambassadors, a student group focused on increasing SUNY New Paltz student engagement with events and exhibits at the Dorsky Museum.

About the Museum
The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, located at SUNY New Paltz, is fast gaining wide recognition as the premier public showplace for exhibition, education, and cultural scholarship about the Hudson Valley region’s art and artists from yesterday and today. With more than 9,000 square feet of exhibition space distributed over six galleries, the Dorsky Museum is one of the largest museums within the SUNY system. The Dorsky was officially dedicated on Oct. 20, 2001. Since then it has presented over one hundred exhibitions, including commissions, collection-based projects, and in-depth studies of contemporary artists including Robert Morris, Alice Neel, Judy Pfaff, Carolee Schneemann, Ushio Shinohara, historic Woodstock artists Eugene Speicher and Charles Rosen, and Hudson Valley luminaries Russel Wright and Dick Polich.
