New Paltz makes top 100 in nationwide ranking of public colleges

The Business Journals and Buffalo Business First have published a new list of the top public colleges and universities in the United States, and SUNY New Paltz was recognized as number 77 out of a total 499 public institutions listed.

New Paltz was one of only ten SUNY and CUNY colleges to make the Buffalo Business First top 100 rankings, from among the 64 colleges and universities within the SUNY system.

The ranking methodology employed by The Business Journals and Buffalo Business First focused on the educational experiences provided to enrolled students, awarding points based on 22 factors including selectivity metrics, graduation and retention rates, graduates’ earnings, campus facilities and resources, and student and faculty diversity (measured by area of origin, race, age and gender).

As the College’s strong performance on this list suggests, SUNY New Paltz consistently outperforms similarly-sized public colleges on many of these metrics. The Business First profile page for New Paltz cites a selective admission rate of 41.5 percent, a high retention rate of 88.9 percent, and a six-year graduation rate of 72.7 percent, well above the national average.

All raw data used to generate this list came from the National Center for Education Statistics and the five-year version of the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2015 American Community Survey. All rates and percentages were calculated by Business First.
