Two student teams win BEA film festival awards

Students and recent graduates from the SUNY New Paltz Department of Digital Media & Journalism will be recognized for their work as documentary filmmakers at the 15th annual Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Festival of the Media Arts, to be held in Las Vegas from April 22-24.

The BEA is the premiere international organization focusing on telecommunications and electronic media, and their annual Festival is a celebration of audio and video production in a variety of genres, by students and faculty from institutions around the globe.

Two teams of New Paltz Digital Media Production students will take home Awards for Excellence at this year’s festival.


One of the winning films is “Living in Recovery,” by Morgan Malecki ’16, Pat Angehr ’16, Ryan Shaffer ’17, and Skyler Onderdonk ’16. The film tells the story of Allie Hill, a woman managing a number of physical and mental illnesses while working as an artist, student and advocate.

The other winner is “Silver, by Alex Connor, Anna Costanza ’17, Heather Mezynski ’17, Dany Ramdhanie ’17 and Brendan Roode ’17. The film chronicles the life and work of Matthew Silver, a performance artist based in New York City.

The awards will be presented at the Broadcast Education Association conference and convention as part of the Festival of Media Arts.
