“Art Uncorked” auction to benefit The Dorsky Museum at SUNY New Paltz

The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at the State University of New York at New Paltz will host an evening of wine tastings and silent and live auctions on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015 from 6-9 p.m. at The Century Association, 7 West 43rd Street, New York City. Proceeds from the event will support The Dorsky Museum’s exhibitions, publications, and public programs.

The event’s honored guest will be James Ottaway, Jr. Wine tastings at the event are courtesy of Whitecliff Vineyards, located in the Hudson Valley near New Paltz. Silent and live auctions include wine from private cellars, modern and contemporary art, enticing destinations and unique experiences. The live auction will be conducted by auctioneer and antiques dealer Judy Milne.

Fine art items to be auctioned include works on paper by Leon Golub, Mary Reid Kelley, Norm Magnusson and Andrew Lyght and photographs by Joel Meyerowitz and Greg Miller. The auction also includes weeklong stays in the Swiss village of Cimivilla in the heart of Swiss-Italian merlot wine country; in Paris; and in the Catskill Mountain region, as well as overnight stays at the Mohonk Mountain House and other Hudson Valley retreats. There will be wines for both the serious collector and the casual enthusiast and VIP tickets to the new hit Broadway musical “Hamilton.”

All of the auction items can be seen on the “Art Uncorked” webpage on the Bidding for Good site.

The event’s honored guest, James Ottaway, Jr., is a retired newspaper executive and former vice president for the international publication of the Wall Street Journal. James and his wife Mary are prominent philanthropists in the Hudson Valley. In 2007 they created a Hudson River Catalogue Endowment to support The Dorsky’s publication program. Through the publication of exhibition catalogues, the Endowment assists the museum in its contribution to the scholarship and appreciation of the art of the Hudson River Valley. The Endowment was a significant supporter of the exhibition catalogue for The Dorsky’s current exhibition, Jervis McEntee: Painter-Poet of the Hudson River School. James was also the driving force behind the creation of the SUNY New Paltz Ottaway Visiting Professorship in Journalism. Named for James’s father, the founder of Ottaway Newspapers, Inc., this Visiting Professorship brings distinguished journalists to New Paltz to teach and work with students.
