Sojourner Truth Library’s digital Special Collections now available at the Digital Public Library of America website

Sojourner Truth Library (STL) at SUNY New Paltz is happy to announce that its Special Collections digital files are now discoverable via the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA).

Library Dean Mark Colvson said, “Our library holds some wonderful documents and photographs that help tell the story of the College and the Hudson Valley. Now through this project, scholars and researchers from around the world can learn more about our rich and varied Special Collections.”

Morgan Gwenwald, outreach librarian, worked with staff, interns and students to identify, scan and post items from the STL Special Collections. According to Gwenwald, many of the most striking and interesting photographs and documents from the early years of the College are now housed on the Hudson River Valley Heritage (HRVH) website along with materials from more than 50 local archives, libraries and historical societies. Recently a rare and fragile book, Second Mohonk Conference on the Negro Question, held at Lake Mohonk in Ulster County in 1891 was scanned and posted on the website making it available to scholars across the globe.

The DPLA strives to contain the full breadth of human expression, from the written word to works of art and culture to records of America’s heritage and the efforts and data of science. Since launching in April 2013, it has aggregated more than 10 million items from libraries, archives and museums nationwide.
