Saturday Young Writers’ Workshop offered at SUNY New Paltz

YOUNG WRITERS’ PROGRAMS
SATURDAY YOUNG WRITERS’ WORKSHOP
November 16, 2013

The Hudson Valley Writing Project is delighted to offer this special morning program at SUNY New Paltz for student writers in grades 3-12 on November 16th from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.

With creative inspiration from some of the region’s finest teachers, students will enjoy a writers’ workshop in which they will draft, revise, refine, and share their work in a small group setting. All writing materials will be provided.

The following workshops will be offered:

LOOK AT THIS!: What Makes Graphic Novels Special?
We will examine graphic novels to notice how writers use pictures and words to tell stories. Then we’ll compose a graphic story of our own.

CAN YOU WRITE A 25-WORD STORY?
How can we get the most mileage out of the fewest words? We’ll have fun exploring “hint stories” and then write fuller stories that force readers to think.

HANGING OFF THE CLIFF
With the right cliffhanger, who knows what will happen?! Enticing readers involves adding suspense to our writing. We’ll discuss the choices authors make about what ideas to leave in or take out and the impact on the reader.

THIS I BELIEVE
Drafting a personal narrative can be enlightening, creative, and even enjoyable. We will look at “This I Believe” essays and then begin writing them ourselves. This workshop is exclusively for high school students who want to spend the morning generating ideas for their college essays.
