NEW PALTZ – The State University of New York at New Paltz’s Distinguished Speaker Series welcomes Amy Waldman to speak about her first novel, The Submission, at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 in Lecture Center 100. A book signing and reception will follow the event.
The Submission, Amy Waldman’s debut novel, imagines a post-9/11 competition for the design of a memorial at ground zero where the winner, selected by a blind jury, turns out to be an American-born Muslim. Reactions from the jury, the public, and the victims’ families are complex and emotional. It was selected as The New York Times Notable Book for 2011 and named finalist for the Hemingway/Foundation/PEN First Fiction Award.
Amy Waldman
Waldman is a former reporter for The New York Times and a former national correspondent for the Atlantic. Her fiction has been published in the Atlantic, the Boston Review and the Financial Times, and anthologized in The Best American Non-Required Reading 2010. She graduated from Yale University and has been a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and at the American Academy in Berlin.

One Book/ One New Paltz has chosen The Submission as the 2012 community read. A series of events and conversations based on Waldman’s novel are scheduled throughout November.
