NEW PALTZ – The State University of New York at New Paltz Department of Music presents Violin Fest on April 19 at 8:00 p.m. in the Julien J. Studley Theatre located on the college campus. Marka Young, concert violinist, will be playing a program of music by Fritz Kreisler, Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofieff and Darius Milhaud.
Violin Fest is a selection of musical pieces composed between 1926 and 1936, combining both popular and light works with more serious classical pieces. The program starts with the fiery Danse Espagnole by Kreisler, written in 1926. Kreisler made a name for himself by playing his transcriptions of popular classical works and “long-last” baroque masterpieces that he himself had composed. His Danse Espagnole for violin and piano is a transcription of part of Manuel de Fella’s opera La Vida Breve, which premiered in Nice in 1913. The program also includes Prokofiev’s beautiful and symphonic Duo for Two Violins, written in Paris in 1932, Stravinsky’s Duo Concertante, (1932), and Milhaud’s Suite for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano.
Marka Young
Young performs as a recitalist and chamber musician on the baroque, classical and modern violin. She has been heard throughout the northeastern United States and Canada, as well as in Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Young made her New York debut in 2002 at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall. She has appeared as a soloist at the Banff, Blossom, Bach Aria, Music Mountain, Connecticut Early Music and Storm King music festivals. She also performs throughout the United States as a recitalist and chamber musician.
Young will be joined by Carole Cowan, violinist, Ruthanne Schempf, pianist, and Rachel Grasso, clarinetist.
