NEW PALTZ – The office of NY State Representative Maurice Hinchey (’68, ’70g) recently announced that the State University of New York at New Paltz and Ulster County Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) will be awarded a U.S. Department of Education Teaching American History grant for their proposal titled An American Story: Struggles & Triumphs.
The program, a joint project of SUNY New Paltz’s Department of History and BOCES, teaches major themes in U.S. history during two-week summer institutes to Kindergarten through fifth grade teachers from Ulster, Dutchess and Orange counties. The institute includes trips to historic sites in the region and New York City. The summer programs are followed up by workshops held throughout the year designed to deepen the content and maintain the community of learners as they move back into their classrooms.
This grant, which will bring over $130,000 to the campus at New Paltz, is the third consecutive grant the College and BOCES have received as part of the program. In addition to faculty members in the Department of History, this new iteration of the institute will include faculty from Political Science, Art History and Black Studies, as well as guest lectures by faculty at other colleges.
