Women’s Basketball Falls to Potsdam

POTSDAM, NY- The New Paltz women’s basketball team fell to the Bears of Potsdam, 66-60 Friday night. The Hawks fall to 9-8 overall and 6-4 in the league. Potsdam improves to 4-13 overall and 3-7 in the league.

Carly Minehan had a team-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and six rebounds. Maggie Farrell added 15 points and Kristen Caban chipped in with 10 points. Caitlin Irwin had finished with six points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Cortney Poirier had a game-high 37 points on 12-of-21 shooting and was 9-of-10 from the free throw line. She also was 4-of-6 from behind arc and grabbed 10 boards for the double-double. Aimee Kellicutt had 16 points, six rebounds and five assists and Rachel Graf chipped in with 11 points.

The Bears jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The Hawks were able to cut the lead to four at 17-13, but the Bears would score 10 straight points for a 23-13 lead. Caban hit a three-pointer to stop the run which propelled the Hawks on a 7-0 run to pull within three at 23-20 with three minutes, 24 seconds remaining. The Bears would take a 27-24 lead into the half.

In the second half, Minehan hit a jumper to cut the lead to one, but the Bears would score seven of the next eight points to take a 34-27 lead. The Hawks fought back to a 41-36 Bears lead, but a 9-0 run put the Bears up 14 with nine minutes and three seconds remaining in the game. The Bears extended their lead to 57-41 with six minutes, 58 seconds to go, but the Hawks quickly got back into the game with a 13-0 run, ignited by a three pointer from Farrell, who had six points during the run. Potsdam would hold off the Hawks in the final minutes for the 66-60 win.
