Seeing an opportunity to improve upon its commitment to offer students career support, the college recently relocated its Career Resource Center to a more heavily trafficked location in the Humanities Building on campus.
Since the move less than a year ago the center has had a 57 percent increase in the number of student visits and, even in the current job market, it has increased the number of employer visits to the campus by 40 percent.
Tonda Highley, associate dean of student advising and director of the Career Resource Center, attributes this increase to the improved visibility of the center – smack in the heart of academic life on campus.
“Students pass the new center in Humanities room 105 every day and they are more apt to stop in to speak with a counselor, use the center’s computers or practice their interviewing techniques,” said Highley.
Students have not been the only beneficiaries of the new location. Faculty members often stop in to request information for students or develop fieldwork opportunities for their classes. In addition, the region’s businesses are becoming savvier by tapping into New Paltz’s talent and offering students and graduates a diverse range of internship and employment opportunities.
“We are so enthusiastic about being among the students and faculty,” added Highley.
