Mapping our future

After two years of planning and broad campus discussion, New Paltz is poised to begin the first phase of a comprehensive, 15-year Site & Landscape Master Plan that includes building and landscape guidelines.

Divided into three phases, the plan ensures that the physical elements of our campus best support institutional values and goals, including overall campus appearance, campus circulation, accessibility, sustainability and the desired future location of building projects.

Building projects in the plan have been developed through a consultative review process in an effort to gain insight into the space and program requirements of all campus departments. These projects include:

  • The renovation of the Wooster Science Building for additional faculty office space, and a food court and dining hall on the ground floor of the building;
  • The reorganization and renovation of the current Sojourner Truth Library in order to meet the campus’ current and future needs;
  • A new Science Building to be located on the corner of Plattekill Avenue and North Manheim Boulevard that will act as a gateway to the college, enhance student-faculty interactions and provide improved, interdisciplinary teaching laboratories and classrooms. This building will qualify for LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The replacement of concrete with additional green space and the development of more pedestrian and bicycle friendly routes across campus are just several of the elements that guide the college’s integrated landscape projects within the plan. They include:

  • Greening of the Main Academic Concourse and the Hasbrouck Quad;
  • Development of the Mohonk Walk, an east-west corridor in the academic center of campus;
  • Restoration of the Campus Pond, which includes an expansion and strategic use of native plant species.
