Softball Takes Two From Fredonia

The softball team hosted Fredonia Sunday afternoon and swept the Blue Devils 6-0 and 5-1. The Hawks improve to 12-12 on the season and 4-6 in conference play.

First year Devon Kelly (Baldwin) led the Hawks in game one as she posted her first shutout on the mound this season. Kelly allowed five hits with one walk and one strikeout and went 2-3 with two RBI at the plate. Rose Dovi (Cortland) finished 2-3 with three RBI and Elizabeth May (Commack) went 2-4 with two runs scored.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Dovi hit a single to center field to score May who started the inning with a single to left field. New Paltz added five runs on four hits with one error in the sixth inning for the final score. With bases loaded and no outs, Dovi hit her second single of the game to score two runs. Erin Fitzpatrick (Delmar/Bethlehem Central) followed with an RBI single and Kelly hit a two run RBI single to left field.

In game two Justine Scutaro (Shoreham/Shoreham Wading River) went 2-3 with an RBI and Fitzpatrick finished 1-3 with two RBI. Melyssa Cilmi (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) and May each tallied two runs as the Hawks left five runners on base. Dovi finished 1-3 and extending her hitting streak to six consecutive games.

New Paltz took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with two runs on two hits and one error. Samantha Barra (Islip) hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Dovi hit an RBI single up the middle. The Hawks added one run in the third on an RBI single by Scutaro.

The Blue Devils cut the lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning as they totaled four hits. New Paltz responded with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning. With runners on second and third and two outs, Fitzpatrick hit an RBI single to center field to complete the scoring.

New Paltz will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Oneonta for conference doubleheader at 3pm with the Red Dragons.
