Ottaway professor of journalism to discuss accountability of the press

NEW PALTZ – Byron Calame, the 2009 James H. Ottaway Sr. Professor of Journalism at the State University of New York at New Paltz, will discuss what the responsibilities of the American press are in today’s new media landscape at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, in Lecture Center room 102.

The talk, “Holding the Press Accountable in a New Era,” is free and open to the public.

As the press has moved to presenting news and information on the Internet, various new ethical challenges have emerged. In his talk, Calame will explore how ombudsmen and other press efforts to be open and interactive with readers can best ensure that journalism serves the public good.

Calame, an award-winning editor at The Wall Street Journal and the former public editor of The New York Times, is a visiting professor at New Paltz this semester and is teaching a course titled “Journalism and Integrity.”
