Kelly Leads Hawks to 11-3 Win; New Paltz Rallies to Win Game Two 9-8

The SUNY New Paltz softball team traveled to Oswego Saturday afternoon and earned two wins against the Lakers, 11-3 and 9-8. The Hawks improve to 17-17 on the season and finish 9-11 in conference play.

First year Devon Kelly (Baldwin) picked up the win in game one as she yielding six hits, two runs (one earned) and struck out three batters in six innings of work. At the plate Kelly finished 2-4 with three RBI, Melyssa Cilmi (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) went 3-4 with three runs scored and Justine Scutaro (Shoreham/Shoreham Wading River) was 3-5 with three RBI.

New Paltz jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening inning on five hits and one Oswego error as Scutaro hit a two-run double to score Cilmi and Tori Kyle (Staten Island/Curtis). Junior Erin Fitzpatrick (Delmar/Bethlehem Central) hit a sacrifice bunt to drive in the third run while Kelly drove in the final run on a single.

In the second game, the Hawks scored three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 8-8 as third baseman Sam Barra (Islip) hit a one-out double to drive in Cilmi and Scutaro who both hit singles. Junior centerfielder Rose Dovi (Cortland) followed with a double to score Barra and New Paltz score the game winner (unearned) on a single from Cilmi. Junior catcher Dale Cornelius (Carle Place) batted 3-4, including a three-run homer with two outs as part of a four-run first inning. Cilmi finished 3-5 and Sarah Palleschi (Chatham) picked up the win in relief, tossing the final two innings. Alyssa Oliva (Fishkill/John Jay) pitched the opening five innings and allowed seven hits, eight runs (three earned) and three walks while striking out two.

The Hawks return home to host Russell Sage in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday April 22nd at 3pm.
