Hawks Win 8-1 Over Hunter

Sophomore Stephanie Schara (Huntington/Kellenberg Memorial) picked up a 7-6 (4), 0-6, 11-9 win in the tiebreak at second singles and teamed up with senior Dana Lim (New City/Clarkstown South) for an 8-4 win at first doubles to help the Hawks to an 8-1 victory over Hunter College Friday afternoon in New Paltz, NY. Hunter won their conference tournament in the fall and will be competing in the NCAA Tournament in May.
The junior duo of Lyndsey Lovinger (Miller Place) and Kerri Serkes (Massapequa) earned an 8-6 win at second doubled and the first year combo of Juliette Brandon (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) and Ingrid Maryansky (Forest Hills) took third doubles 8-2 to put New Paltz up 3-0 to start the match.
The Hawks then took control in singles play, winning five of the six matches. Hunters’ only win of the match came at first singles when Kim defeated Lim in straight sets of 6-4, 6-4. Lovinger fought back to win third singles 6-4, 6-4 after trailing 4-0 in the first set. Maryansky won her fourth singles match 6-1, 6-1, while Serkes took fifth singles 6-1, 6-1 and Brandon won at sixth singles 6-0, 6-0.
Both teams will return to the court tomorrow when as the Hawks are hosting the New Paltz Tournament beginning at 9am. Four other schools will be participating including Cortland, Mt. St. Mary, Oneonta and RIT.
