Hawk hitters dominate Mt. St. Mary’s pitching

NEWBURGH, NY The SUNY New Paltz baseball team traveled to Mount Saint Mary College Wednesday night for a game at Delano-Hitch Stadium.  The Hawks hitters lit-up the Blue Knights pitching for 20 runs on 16 hits in a 20-2 rout.

The Hawks were led by freshman Mike Sherlock (Liverpool, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) who was 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI’s from the plate and senior Tyler Terlecky (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) was 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBI’s to help lead the Hawks in the win.  Freshman Philip Parker (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) was a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate and three walks with three runs and one RBI.  Freshman Paul Merola (Cornwall on-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) was 2-for-6 with three runs and two RBI’s and freshman Matt O’Neill (West Chester, PA/Henderson High) was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI’s.

The Blue Knights were led by Brian Visconti who was 3-for-4 with one run from the plate and John Conroy, Billy Casey and Jim Marsh each added two hits apiece.

Mt. St. Mary’s threatened in the bottom of the first as the Blue Knights loaded the bases with one out, but freshman pitcher Timmy Chelius (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) got Matthew Germann to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.  The Blue Knights would take the early lead in the bottom of the third when Brian Visconti hit a triple of the wall in left center field and scored on a passed ball. 

The Hawks would score four in the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles from Merola and Terlecky and O’Neill would double them home to take the 2-1 lead.  Sherlock would then double home O’Neill and Sherlock would later score on a passed ball for the 4-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Hawks put up a nine spot as they would bring 13 batters to the plate and would add two in the sixth and four more in the eighth.

The Blue Knights starting pitcher Brian O’Connor allowed four runs (3 ER) on five hits in three and two thirds innings, striking out three and walking two.  Matt Paci allowed five runs (2 ER) on one hit in two thirds of an innings walking two and striking out one.  Three more pitchers would combine for three and two thirds innings and allowing ten runs (8 ER) on ten hits and walking five.  Mt. St. Mary College falls to 18-4 overall.

Freshman starting pitcher Timmy Chelius shut down the Blue Knights allowing two runs (1 ER) on ten hits in six innings and striking out two to earn his first collegiate victory.  Freshman Pat Sylvester (Garden City, NY/Garden City) earned his first career save as he pitched the final three innings of the game allowing three hits and striking out two.  The Hawks improve to 6-15 overall and 2-4 in the SUNYAC.

New Paltz returns to the field Friday against non-conference opponent Baruch at 3 p.m. at Loren Campbell Field on the campus of SUNY New Paltz.
