Softball Sweeps Mt. St. Mary College 8-0, 12-3

Junior Erin Fitzpatrick (Delmar/Bethlehem Central) was 4-4 on the day as the Hawks swept the Blue Knights of Mt. St. Mary College on Wednesday. New Paltz shutout the Knights 8-0 in the first game and won 12-3 in the nightcap as they improve to 8-6 and snap and three game losing skid.

Fitzpatrick was 3-for-3 from the plate in the first game and Justine Scutaro (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) went 2-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Samantha Barra (Islip) went 1-2 with two runs and three RBI and Jordan Paley (Albany) hit a two run RBI single as she went 1-3 from the plate. Devon Kelly (Baldwin) earned her third win of the season on the mound as she threw all five innings. She allowed two hits with zero runs and struck out six batters.

The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Scutaro hit an RBI double to center field and Barra hit a sacrifice fly to center. New Paltz added two runs in the fourth inning when Paley hit her two run RBI single to right field with two outs and a full count. New Paltz completed the scoring in the fifth inning when they totaled four runs on six hits including a two run RBI triple by Barra. Designated hitter Rose Dovi (Cortland) and catcher Jenna Curcio (Conklin/Susquehanna Valley) drove in the other runs with RBI singles up the middle and to left center, respectively.

In the nightcap, Fitzpatrick was 1-1 and Jacqueline Masseo (Staten Island/Wagner) went 1-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Dovi was 3-4 with three RBI and Dale Cornelius (Carle Place) tallied two runs and two RBI. Alyssa Oliva (Fishkill/John Jay) earned the win on the mound as she threw five innings and allowed three runs (one earned) eight hits and struck out five batters.

New Paltz scored three runs on five hits in the second inning on a two run RBI up the middle by Dovi and an RBI single by Elizabeth Tong (Woodstock/Onteora). In the third inning, Barra and Cornelius both had RBI’s to score Tori Kyle (Staten Island/Curtis) and Scutaro, respectively. Junior Melyssa Cilmi (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) hit an double to left center to score Masseo for the 6-0 lead.

The Blue Knights cut the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth with three hits and one error. New Paltz responded with three runs in the fifth inning including Masseo’s two run RBI triple to right field with two outs. First year Cassie Barcavage (Cold Spring/Haldane) followed with a single to send Masseo home.

Mt. St. Mary loaded the bases in the fifth with one out when they hit an RBI single to center field. The Blue Knights attempted to score two runs on the play but Cilmi threw out the runner at home. New Paltz completed the scoring in the sixth inning with three runs on one hit and three errors.

The Hawks will host their home opener on Friday March 27th at 3pm against conference opponent Geneseo.
