Hawks fall to Morrisville 12-9 in women’s lacrosse

MORRISVILLE, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s lacrosse team fell to host Morrisville State, 12-9 on Tuesday evening. 

In the first half, the Hawks jumped out to the 1-0 lead just 1:12 into the game when freshman Sam DelGaudio (Northport, NY/Northport) beat the Mustangs goalie.  The Mustangs Jennifer Caffarelli evened the contest at 1-1 eight minutes later.  Freshman Kim Hall (Cortland, NY/Cortland) gave the lead back to the Hawks and DelGaudio added her second of the contest to give the Hawks the 3-1 advantage.  The Hawks would go into the half lead 5-2.

The second half, the Mustangs scored three straight to tie the contest at 5-5 just four minutes into the half.  The Hawks would regain the lead 6-5 three minutes later when sophomore Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) beat the goalie.  The Mustangs would score two straight and five of the next six goals to give them a 10-7 advantage.  The Mustangs would hold the lead and go onto the 12-9 victory.

The Mustangs Jennifer Caffarelli had a game high six goals and one assist and Elizabeth Peck tallied three goals to help lead the Mustangs.  Jennifer May recorded the win in net saving nine and allowing nine goals as Morrisville improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC.

The Hawks were led by DelGaudio with three goals and two assists and Hall tallied two goals and one assist.  Bennett added two goals and freshman Julia Donato (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) chipped in with a one goal, one assist and had three groundballs.  Junior Frieda Shumel (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) tallied the her first career goal and freshman Bridget Grover (Rockville Centre, NY/Holy Trinity) caused three turnovers and had four groundballs.   

Lorraine Vultaggio (Babylon, NY/Miller Place) recorded the loss in net, saving nine shots and allowing 12 goals.  The Hawks fall to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the SUNYAC.  The Hawks return to the field April 4 against Geneseo at 1 p.m. on the campus of SUNY Geneseo.
