Hawks defeat Ramapo and win second straight

MAHWAH, NJ- The SUNY New Paltz women’s lacrosse team traveled to New Jersey for their fourth game of the year against Ramapo College.  The Hawks defeated the Roadrunners from Ramapo, 12-7 scoring nine in the first half.  The Hawks would only turnover the ball five times to Roadrunners 13 on the evening.

The Roadrunners scored first just 48 seconds into the game when Colleen Steel found Jenna Pfarr for the goal for the early advantage.  The Hawks would tie the score three minutes later when sophomore Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) beat the Roadrunners goalie for the unassisted goal.  The Hawks would score two straight, one by freshman Julia Donato (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) and the third goal by Bennett.  The Roadrunners would cut the lead to 3-2 on a goal by Brittany Gazzanigo. 

The Hawks would score six goals over the last ten and half minutes of the first half to take a 9-2 half time advantage.  Bennett would tally a hat-trick on a free positions shot with 6:09 remaining in the half to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead.  Freshmen Emma Lynch (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) and Kim Hall (Cortland, NY/Cortland) each tallied a score.  Senior Jillian Carfarchio (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) tallied her first career goal to help the Hawks in their first half surge.

In the second half, the Roadrunners tried to make a come back scoring just 41 seconds into the half, but the Hawks would tally three straight to put the game out of reach.  Bennett tallied her fourth goal of the goal and team tying 11th goal on a free position shot with 9:36 remaining in the game.  Donato would finish the game three goals, one assist and a game-high five ground balls and Lynch finished with two goals for the Hawks. 

Ramapo would score four goals in the last eight minutes to cut the lead to 12-7, but the Hawks would not allow the Roadrunners to come any closer. 

The Roadrunners were led by Jenna Pfarr with three goals and Colleen Steel would add a goal and two assists.  Jessica Long would tally two assists in the loss for the Roadrunners.  Diana Silva tallied three saves and allowed seven goals in 24:39 minutes of play to record the loss and Megan Tierney allowed five goals and made nine saves in 35:21 minutes played.  Ramapo falls to 0-4 on the season.

Senior goalkeeper Lorraine Vultaggio (Babylon, NY/Miller Place) tallied 11 saves in net for the win and the Hawks improve to 2-2 overall with their second straight win.  The Hawks will return to the field March 30th for their home opener against non-conference opponent Manhattanville at 4 p.m.
