First half lifts Manhattanville past Hawks in women’s lacrosse

NEW PALTZ, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s lacrosse team fell to visiting Manhattanville College Monday evening 14-10 in the Hawks first home game of the season.

Manhattanville opned the scoring just a minute into the game and would score the first three goals of the contest to jump out to an early 3-0 advantage.  The Hawks would rally and score two straight goals in two minutes to pull within one at 3-2.  Manhattanville would control the rest of the half scoring five straight goals over 18 minutes to take a 8-2 lead.  Brittany Bennett would tally the Hawks third goal of the half as time expired to cut the lead to five at 8-3.

In the second half, the Hawks would tally the first goal with 20:43 remaining to cut the lead in half at 8-4.  Manhattanville would answer right back with a goal a minute later to make it 9-4.  After a goal by Kim Hall for the Hawks, Manhattanville would score four straight to take a 14-6 advantage with 4:48 remaining.  The Hawks would tally the last four goals of the game to make complete the score at 14-10.

Abbe Grimes led Manhattanville with six goals and one assist and Emelda Ogweta had a hat-trick.  Katie Bertel and Jen Ascencio each scored two for Manhattanville in the victory. 

Kirstin Betsill recorded the win in net saving six and allowing ten goals.  Manhattanville improves to 6-2 overall and 2-2 MAC.

The Hawks were led by Sam DelGaudio and Julia Donato with three goals apiece and Bennett finished with two goals.  DelGaudio tallied two assists for the Hawks.

Lorraine Vultaggio recorded the loss in net saving 15 shots and allowing 14 goals.  The Hawks fall to 2-3 overall and 0-0 in the SUNYAC.  The Hawks return to the field tomorrow against Morrisville State at 4 p.m. on the campus of Morrisville State College.
