Brockport downs New Paltz in doubleheader

NEW PALTZ, NY- The SUNY New Paltz baseball team fell to visiting Brockport to open conference play Saturday afternoon on Loren Campbell Field.  The Hawks fell in game one 10-3 and game two 10-4.

In game one, Brockport opened the scoring off a Tim McCormick singled that scored Joe Zaccardo who led the inning off with a double.  The Hawks would score two in the bottom half the inning with two outs.  Chris Paulicelli (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) drew a walk and moved into scoring position on a pass ball then Tyler Terlecky (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) also drew a walk.  Devin Scalabrini (Peekskill, NY/Mahopac) singled up the middle to bring home Paulicelli to tie the game.  Matt O’Neill (West Chester, PA/Henderson High) drove in Terlecky to give the Hawks the lead 2-1. 

The Golden Eagles would tie the game at 2-2 when Kris Gentzke scored on an error by the Hawks.  The Hawks would regain the gain in the bottom of the inning on a Paulicelli RBI single that scored Paul Merola (Cornwall on Hudson, NY/Cornwall).  Brockport would tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth with a run and would take the lead in the top of sixth with four runs to give them a 7-3 advantage.  The Golden Eagles would score three in the top of the eighth to complete the scoring for the 10-3 final.

Joe Zaccardo led Brockport going 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs and two RBI’s.  Jason Michaels was 1-for-3 with two runs and a RBI and Tom McCormick was 2-for-5 with a run and RBI to help Brockport to the victory.

Jason Shannon pitched eight innings allowing three runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out five for the win.  Kyle Harris pitched a pitched ninth inning to close out the game.

The Hawks were led by Paulicelli who was 2-for-3 from the plate with a run and RBI.  Scalabrini finished 2-for-4 from the plate with a RBI and O’Neill finished 1-for-3 with a RBI.

Jonathan Shanks (Millbrook, NY/Millbrook) recorded the loss on the mound giving up seven runs (4 ER) on five hits, walking five and striking four in six innings. 

In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles scored four in the top of the third to take the advantage and two more in the top of the fifth to take a 6-0 lead.  Brockport would add two in the top of the sixth for the 8-0, but the Hawks would cut into the lead with three in the bottom half of the sixth. 

In the bottom of the eighth, the Hawks were threatening with the bases loaded, but Brockport pitcher Mark Caruana came in relieve and only allowed one run to stop any damage the Hawks would of caused.  Brockport would add two in the top of the ninth to complete the score for the 10-4 final.

Jason Michaels led the Golden Eagles going 3-for-5 from the plate with two runs and four RBI’s and Joe LaDuca was 2-for-4 with three runs and Max Zimmerman was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI’s.

Steve Locke allowed three runs (2 ER) on three hits and striking out three in seven innings.  Brockport the two wins, the Golden Eagles improve to 4-11 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC.

Merola led the Hawks from the plate going 1-for-4 with two runs and Scalabrini was 1-for-3 with a RBI for the Hawks.  Mike Sherlock (Liverpool, NY/Cicero North-Syracuse) added a RBI groundout for the Hawks in the loss.

Pat Sylvester (Garden City, NY/Garden City) allowed five runs on five hits and walking four in three and a third innings.  New Paltz falls to 2-13 overall and 0-2 in the SUNYAC.

The Hawks will return to the field Monday at 12 p.m. against conference opponent Fredonia for a doubleheader.
