Women’s Basketball Remains Unbeaten in Conference Play

POTSDAM, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team traveled to Potsdam Friday night and claimed a 65-59 victory over the Bears to remain undefeated in conference play.

With 3:42 minutes remaining in the second half and the Bears trailing 59-47, they went on a 8-0 run to pull within four points at 59-55, but the Hawks junior guard Maggie Farrell (Hillsdale, NY/Immaculate) sealed the deal going 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the last 26 seconds of the game.  Farrell finished with a team high 13 points, nine in the second half, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.  Freshman guard Caitlin Irwin (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) added 11 points all in the second half and Carly Minhan (Albany, NY/Albany) had seven points and five rebounds to pace the Hawks. 

The Bears were led by Cortney Poirier with a game high 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals.  Hannah Fairchild and Maureen Curley eached added 12 points.

In the first half, the Hawks jumped out to a 11-0 lead in the first six minutes, but the Bears were able to chip away at the lead to go into the half tied 27-27. 

Nicole Sarcone (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) paced the Hawks with six points and two steals and Abbey DeRossi (Albany, NY/Albany) and Minehan each had five points in the first half.

The Bears Curley had eights points and Poirier had six points and five rebounds in the first half.

The Hawks trailed only a total 19 seconds the entire game and for 12th time in 13 games, the Hawks won the turnover battle, forcing 20 turnovers against the Bears.

The Hawks advance to 10-3 on the season and 6-0 in conference play and will return to the court on Saturday when they face Plattsburgh at 2 p.m. Live Stats will be available for the game. http://sidearmstats.com/plattsburgh/wbball
