Four Players in Double Digits Not Enough to Beat Brockport

The women’s basketball team dropped their second conference game of the season with a 67-61 loss to Brockport on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks fall to 11-5 on the season and 7-2 in the SUNYAC, while Brockport improved to 9-8 and 4-4.

Four players finished in double digits for the Hawks, led by sophomore Artie Williams who posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards. Carly Minehan chipped in with 13 points and nine boards. Chelsea Clarke tallied 11 points, six boards and junior Nicole Sarcone added 11 points, six boards, six assists and three steals.

Sarcone hit two foul shots with two seconds left in the first half for a 36-36 intermission. Brockport led by as many as five at 23-18 before New Paltz used a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to go up 29-25. The Golden Eagels responded with an 11-3 run to regain the lead at 36-32 with over a minute to play in the half before Williams made a layup and set the stage for Sarcone’s clutch free throws to make the second half a new ball game.

In the second stanza, New Paltz led 43-42 before a Brockport three pointer would give the Golden Eagles the lead for the remainder of the contest. The Hawks were within three at the six minute mark but that is as close as they would come. New Paltz dominated the boards 54-45 but only managed to shoot 30% from the field and Brockport shot 42%.

The Hawks will return to action on Tuesday February 3rd when they host Cortland at 6pm. Cortland is 15-2 on the season and unbeaten at 8-0 in the conference. Hawk fans are asked to wear orange to the game.
