Ducks Swim Past Hawks

The men’s and women’s swim teams traveled to Stevens Institute of Technology Monday afternoon and fell to the Ducks. The women lost 118-87, while the men lost 124-82.

The men notched two first place finishes and took second eight times. Junior Stephen Cozzolongo finished first in the 100 fly (53.87) and sophomore Dave Gardner won the 100 free (49.67). Cozzolongo also took second in the 100 back (55.66) and Gardner touched second in the 200 free (1:51.28). The two combined with Rob Webb and Billy Papetti to finish second in the 200-medley relay (1:40.27). First year Pete Nastasti claimed second in the 1000 free (10:23.05), Papetti finished second in the 50 free (22.66), Zack Lowenstein touched second in the 400 IM (4:34.98) and Webb took second in the 100-breast (1:05.25). Lowenstein and Papetti teamed up with Matt Demerest and Pat Rathbun for a second place finish in the 200 free relay (1:31.72).

Senior Joelle Hopf and sophomore Jess Lester posted the two lone individual wins of the day for the women. Hopf claimed the 100-breast (1:09.30), which was a New Paltz sweep as Erica Ellis took second and Becky Baker touched third. Lester took first in the 1000 free (11:12.13) and placed second in the 500 free (5:29.36). The only other first place finish came in the 200-medley relay of Samantha Graham, Baker, Ellis and Christine Rieth in a time of 1:53.72. Rieth posted two-second place finishes in the 50 free (25.43) and the 100 free (54.92). Sophomore Marissa Morris placed second in the 200 free (2:00.94) and the 100 back (1:04.27) and teamed with Allison Wells, Lester and Tiffany Sorrell for second place in the 200 free relay (1:44.11).

The women will return to action on Saturday January 24th when they compete at the RPI Invitational and both teams will return to the pool for their final home meet on Saturday January 31st when they host Cortland at 1pm.
