Women’s Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw Against Geneseo

The SUNY New Paltz (4-5-1, 1-2-1 SUNYAC) women’s soccer team battled to a double overtime scoreless tie against the visiting Geneseo Knights (5-3-1, 2-1-1 SUNYAC). The Hawks are now 1-12-2 all time against Geneseo.

After a lack luster first half, the action picked up in the second half with several key scoring opportunities. In the 50th minute New Paltz’s Rebecca Devlin (Staten Island/Moore Catholic) took a shot from the right side of the box that Geneseo keeper Katie Clerkin knocked away on a diving save. Senior Jennifer Anselmi (North Rockland) picked up the rebound and fired a one touch shot that missed wide left. Eight minutes later Kate Addiss (Amherst) blasted a shot that sailed high, followed by another missed shot by Anselmi.

Geneseo’s first opportunity of the second half came at 62:08 on a shot by Jane Matejcik to the left side that was saved by New Paltz goalie Sarah Boccard (Washingtonville). At 70:10, Geneseo had a goal called back due to an offsides call.  Genseo had one more opportunity in regulation when Ashley Modica missed a shot wide right with just over 12 minutes left.

In the first overtime, Jennifer Moretti (Sayville) took a direct kick in the first overtime from about 25 yards out that was denied. Geneseo responded with two quick opportunities, one of which Bella Masotti blasted a shot that deflected off the cross bar.

In the second overtime, Addiss had the lone shot for New Paltz while Matejcik took two of the three shots that Geneseo registered.

Geneseo held a slight 15-13 shot advantage and 4-3 on the corners. Boccard posted seven saves in net for New Paltz as Clerkin made six saves for the Knights.

New Paltz will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Brockport at 1pm.
