College to offer 15-credit Multicultural Education certificate

The State University of New York at New Paltz is now accepting applications for a new post-master’s Multicultural Education certificate program.

The 15-credit program aims to help teachers and other educational professionals understand the ways in which race, gender, class, language, sexual orientation, religion, physical and learning disabilities influence them as professionals, their students and in the educational process. In creating this awareness, the program provides teachers, counselors and administrators with competencies for culturally responsive teaching and leadership.

“In addition to gaining deeper understandings and practical skills from this certificate program, those enrolled will join a community of professionals who value education equity and social justice,” said Nancy Schniedewind, a founder of the Humanistic and Multicultural Education Program at the college.

The program will be housed under the Department of Educational Studies, which consists of the programs of Humanistic and Multicultural Education, Special Education and the Educational Foundations. The curriculum will also draw on the resources of the Second Language Education program in the Department of Secondary Education.

The Graduate School at New Paltz is accepting applications from teachers interested in enrolling in this post-master’s certificate program for the 2009 spring semester.
