Softball Splits with Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY — The softball team traveled to Brockport this afternoon and rebounded from a 2-0 loss in game one to win game two by a 7-3 final score.
In the first game, Brockport took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and that is all they would need as pitcher Stephanie Geer threw a perfect game, allowing no base runners and striking out seven. Courtney Costello took the loss for New Paltz, allowing nine hits, two runs and striking out three in the complete game.
In the night-cap of the twin-billing, the two teams played four scoreless innings before the Hawks pushed across two runs in the top of the fifth inning on two hits and an error. New Paltz added to their lead when Erin Fitzpatrick hit a two-run home run over the left field fence pushing the lead to 4-0 after six innings. The Hawks would score three more in the top of the seventh for a 7-0 lead. With two outs in the seventh Brockport hit a single, followed by back-to-back homeruns for a 7-3 score, before Costello came in on relief and retired the next batter to end the game.
Mel Cilmi was 2-3 and Lauren Motzkin had two run RBI double to lead the Hawks. Senior Michelle Reinke earned the win on the mound allowing five hits, three runs, one walk in 6.2 innings of work in addition to striking out five batters.
