Homeruns by Cadmus and Chaputian Not Enough to Overcome Cortland

NEW PALTZ, NY — The baseball team hosted Cortland this afternoon in a SUNYAC doubleheader and fell to the Red Dragons 9-1 in the opener and 16-3 in the nightcap. The Hawks fall to 16-17 on the season and 4-8 in conference play, while Cortland improved to 27-3 and remain undefeated at 12-0 in the SUNYAC.
Cortland took an early 1-0 run lead on a sacrifice fly to right center by Nick DeVito to score Jason Simone when bases were loaded. New Paltz escaped the inning as the next two batters flew out to center and a grounded out to short. New Paltz tied the game in the second inning on a walk off homerun by Alex Cadmus over the left field fence. Cortland used three runs on four hits in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. In the eighth inning, Cortland had back to back singles followed by back to back doubles to score three runs. The Red Dragons completed the scoring in the ninth inning with two runs on three hits.
Cadmus and Jesse Marsh each went 2-for-4 to lead the Hawks. Cortland totaled 16 hits and left eight on base, while New Paltz registered six hits and left seven on base.
Jeff Stith took the loss on the mound, allowing four runs on eight hits, two walks and striking out two batters in six innings. Matt Tone threw seven innings for the Red Dragons, allowing five hits, one walk and striking out twelve.
In the second game, Cortland scored two unearned runs in the first inning and plated one run in the second for the 3-0 lead. New Paltz scored their only runs of the game in the second inning on a game tying three run homer by Doug Chaputian to score Tyler Terlecky and Alex Cadmus. Terlecky started the inning with a double down the right field line and Cadmus reached on error by the shortstop. Over the next five innings, Cortland put together 13 runs on 14 hits and four errors en route to the 16-3 final.
New Paltz registered six hits in game as Terlecky led the way going 2-for-3. Jimmy Donohue took the loss allowing 12 runs, nine hits, four walks, and striking out three batters in 4.1 innings.
New Paltz returns to action on April 23rd when they travel to Old Westbury for a 6pm non-conference match up, before returning home to host Mt. St. Mary at 4pm on April 24th.
