Softball Shuts Out Alverno 12-0, Defeats UMass Dartmouth 8-2

FT. MYERS, FL — The softball team shut out Alvernon 12-0 and defeated UMass-Dartmouth 8-2 to improve their overall record to 7-1. Molly Squires earned the win on the mound in game one, as Michelle Reinke preserved the shutout. Lauren Motzkin was 2-4 from the plate with three RBIs. Dale Cornelius went 2-3 with three RBIs and Liz Tong was 2-3 with one RBI. New Paltz scored one run in first and tacked on four more runs in the second. The Hawks tallied their final seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.
In game two first year Courtney Costello earned the win on the mound allowing seven hits, two runs and four strikeouts. Melyssa Cilmi was 2-4, including a two run RBI double down the right field line. Justine Scutaro was 2-4 and Cornelius scored three runs, including a solo homerun. New Paltz took a 1-0 lead in the second when Brittany O’Hara hit Scutaro home. Erin Fitzpatrick started the third inning with a double but advanced home on an error by the right fielder. With two outs, Cornelius hit her homerun to put the Hawks up 3-0. O’Hara started the fourth with a single down the left line and Fitzpatrick walked. Cilmi hit both runners home on a double for the 5-0 lead. New Paltz tallied a single run in the fifth and the final two runs in the sixth. UMass-Dartmouths only two runs came in the top of the sixth inning.
The Hawks will return to action tomorrow when they face Bowdoin at 11am and Wisconsin-Whitewater at 1pm.
